What is Spiritual Direction?

"The nature of this flower is to bloom."

Alice Walker

The spiritual quest is an ancient one, where people from all cultures have been drawn by longing to connect with Being, God, Source, Gaia, Tao, Spirit, Mystery, Love, whichever name or face of Transcendence that speaks to their deepest heart.

For non-theistic seekers, it may be a yearning to align with the wisest virtues of being human and interdependent with the vibrant web of planetary life.

Spiritual direction is a healing path that holds deep listening, spontaneous conversation, and compassionate space for the ongoing emergence and unfolding of the real, most-alive you .

Following spiritual impulse draws us toward wonder, to the sacred, and nests us within the larger Whole to guide our way and work in the world.

Spiritual direction is a relationship of presence with special care given to following the flow of sacred life in a person.

The dynamic is not that of seeker and guru, or disciple and teacher. The aim is attending to the movements of Essence in the individual -- that indestructible, indescribably tender part of you which tugs for notice among the urgencies of the day and even courts you through dreams in the night; it could be called the kingdom / kin-dom of heaven within you, your Buddha nature, atman, inner wisdom, your clearest intuition.

We all have stories of hiding, squirreling away the most secret treasure-parts of ourselves due to shame, trauma, or the force of "shoulds."

Tending our spiritual life links us to a vast ecosystem, whose beauty inspires us when our hearts are aflame with joy and zeal, whose strength holds us when we are pulled by crisis, suffering, or numbed by fatigue and tedium.

Spiritual direction is an invitation to transformation and being gathered to your original wholeness, the wellspring of your flourishing and offerings to the world.
